Says that Edna St. Vincent Millay and Prof. Raymond Weeks of Columbia University spoke very favorably about the Markham's; was apponted to lecture on modern poetry at Columbia by Prof. Weeks; offers to have Virgil come to Columbia Univ. and could share his quarters with him.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
